Hinds Feet in High Places

by Hannah Hurnard (in the 1950s)

No this isn’t a story about deer… (a hind is another word for deer). I once gave this book to someone who read the first few chapters thinking the main characters were deer. It’s based off of the verse in Habakkuk 3:19 “The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,  he enables me to tread on the heights.”

This is a beautiful allegory about a girl named Much Afraid, who must face her fears, take the hands of Sorrow and Suffering, and follow the Good Shepherd up the mountains to the High Places. It’s a story about fear transforming into trust and experiencing beauty and safety in the arms of our Heavenly Father. A must read.

This version is beautiful. Buy this one.

Here, Now: Unearthing Peace and Presence in an Overconnected World

by Kate Merrick

Through her journey of grief and her daughter’s cancer, she shares her experience of going off the grid and living in Israel for treatments. This book made me realize I didn’t want to wait for a tragedy to make some major changes to the culture of our family life. I don’t want to waste time being distracted by meaninglessness and have my eyes wide open to what and who is in front of me. This book was pivotal for me on my journey to cultivate rhythms of rest.

Trustworthy Bible Study

by Lysa Terkeurst

I did this study the spring of 2022 with some other ladies and the Lord used it tremendously to speak to areas of distrust in my heart. We can learn so much from the kings of the Old Testament… very few trusted God with their whole hearts. Even the best kings still did not remove all of the high places and allowed other idols to be worshipped. This did not go well for them. God wants our whole hearts… our full trust… for our good. He will not share it with our idols. This is a great study if you are looking to take a deep, steady dive into Scripture.

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

by John Mark Comer

This book radically changed the way I think about my time and was a major impetus in some of the changes we’ve made as a family. He talks a lot about attention, what it looks like to live differently in our technology-saturated world, and points to the example of Jesus as our model and source for rest. I highly recommend!

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

by Eugene Peterson

I originally wanted to name my blog something along the lines of this title because it resonates so deeply with what God has been laying on my heart for decades. “Let’s go the long haul together.” This is a guide for how to go the long haul of discipleship as a follower of Jesus. It is jam-packed with wisdom and solid teaching. I highlighted the whole thing. Thanks Eugene!

The Daily Office Podcast

by Andrew Russell

Morning prayer according to the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Ross and I have been listening to this pretty consistently because it’s a great way to incorporate a rhythm of prayer and Scripture into our day. There have been so many times God has spoken through these daily readings, and I love being able to stay connected to Ross and others by listening to the same thing.
